KEVON Carter (no address given) was sentenced to three years imprisonment yesterday, on conviction for larceny from a dwelling house.
Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, the convict admitted that, between April 10 and 17 last, in Barima Avenue, Bel Air Park, Georgetown, he stole one cell phone and Guyana and United States (U.S.) currency, to a total value of G$1M, property of Enoch Gaskin. Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said Carter frequents the home of the virtual complainant, who discovered his loss on April 17.
The prosecutor said Gaskin made contact with Carter and took him to the police station where the latter confessed to the crime, claiming that he used some of the money to help two friends pay their Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) fees and spent the remainder.
Carter apologised to Gaskin and said he did not mean to hurt anyone and explained that he expected to be repaid and would make restitution.
He requested to be punished other than by imprisonment but the magistrate informed him that the system does not work that way. Once he pleads guilty, it is the virtual complainant who has to decide to drop the charges and he did not give that indication.
