Yorke tipped for coaching role at Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC) – Trinidadian football star Dwight Yorke has been tipped to take over as head coach of Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory.
The 39-year-old former Manchester United striker is the latest personality to be linked with the club following the axing of Ernie Merrick in March.

Club chairman Anthony Di Pietro shied away from confirming or denying Yorke was a candidate for the post.
“We are keeping our supporters informed of the process and did so with a statement on our website before Easter,” the Melbourne Age quoted Di Pietro as saying.
“We have had some 70 applicants, many of a very high calibre, and until we make a decision I will not comment on who has applied or who is on the shortlist.”
The role would be Yorke’s first major assignment, following a spell as assistant to Ricky Sbragia at English club Sunderland in 2008, following the resignation of Roy Keane.
Yorke, who played one season with Sydney FC in the A-League in 2005, had an outstanding playing career in England where he played for Aston Villa, Blackburn and Sunderland.
The highlight of his career, however, was a record signing for United in 1998 and was part of the squad that achieved the vaunted Treble a year later.
Melbourne are one of the most successful A-League clubs having won the title twice.
