Three of the five DIDCO employees admitted to Balwant Singh’s Hospital, East Street, Georgetown, after being injured in a workplace accident at the company’s Ramp Road Hatchery on Monday, have since been discharged, while two others remain warded at the institution.
Seven employees were injured when the elevator in which they were in at the facility malfunctioned and crashed 18 feet to the ground.
Two of the employees who suffered minor injuries, Shulawn Bowen and Bharrat Jodha, were treated and sent home soon after being examined at the hospital.
Those admitted and discharged were Gaytri Sukhraj, Satyanand Sookraj, and Insaf Zakir, who all suffered fractures to the legs.
More seriously injured and still hospitalized are Supervisor, Surujdai Ramraj who suffered a dislocated hip and injuries to the leg; and Sanita Rambarran with injuries to the back and leg.
Personnel Manager Ms. Solange Pertab, who, on behalf of the company, expressed regrets over the injuries suffered by the employees, said that the accident occurred shortly after 02:00hrs Monday as the employees, a supervisor and seven labourers employed in the setters department, were returning to the ground floor after packing eggs in the hatchery.
The staff who confirmed that there was no power outage at the time of the accident, recalled that one of the male labourers used his cellular phone to contact one of the managers, who in turn contacted others and mobilized help for them.  They were all rushed to hospital.
The employees are likely to be away from work for about one month, Pertab said. She also assured that DIDCO was taking an active interest in their health and welfare , which included ensuring they got the best possible medical treatment and care.  Meanwhile, officials of the Ministry of Labour have visited the worksite and are investigating the incident.
