Theatre Guild hosts awards ceremony Sunday

GUYANA’s premiere theatrical and performance facility, The Theatre Guild of Guyana, is setting to celebrate a year of accomplishments. The Playhouse recently released a list of nominees who will be honoured at an award ceremony next Sunday hosted at its Playhouse at 115 Parade Street, Kingstown, Georgetown.

The plays ‘Old Story Time’ and ‘Fences’ are the 2010 nominees for Best Set and Best Costume.

Nominated in the category Best Production of a Guyanese Play is ‘Massacuraman’, written by Paloma Mohamed and Directed by Jennifer Thomas; ‘Shoes Blues’, written by Michael Duff and directed by Jennifer Thomas; ‘Somebody Gon Horn Yu’, by Fitzroy Tyrrell, directed by Jennifer Thomas and Sheron Taylor;  and ‘Every Time I Feel De Spirit’ by Raschid Osman, directed by Jennifer Thomas.

In the category Best Production are ‘Shoes Blues’, ‘Somebody Gon Horn Yu’, ‘Fences’, and ‘Old Story time’.

Vying for title of the Best Director is Jennifer Thomas for ‘Shoes Blues’, Godfrey Naughton for ‘Fences’ and Ron Robinson for ‘Old Story Time’.

Best Actor nominees are Kijana Lewis in ‘Somebody Gon Horn Yu’, ‘Godfrey Naughton in Fences’ and Ron Robinson in ‘Old Story Time’. Actors Linden Jones and Travis Chase are nominated for Best Supporting Actors for their performance in ‘Fences’ as well as Henry Rodney and Derek Gomes in ‘Old Story Time’.

Best Actress nominees are  Latoya Whaul in ‘ Blues’,  Jennifer Thomas  in  ‘Somebody Gon Horn Yu’, Sonia Yarde in  ‘Fences’, and Simeon Dowding in “Old Story Time’.

Founded in 1957 and opened in 1960, The Theatre Guild of Guyana’s Playhouse is the oldest theatrical and performance facility in Guyana and the second oldest in the Caribbean.

As part of its mandate, the not-for-profit NGO, the Theatre Guild of Guyana, aims to nurture and train performers across the spectrum of the performing arts in Guyana and the region.
The ceremony is planned for January 9, 2011, at 19:00hrs at the playhouse.
