After explosives find…
THE man whose birthday was being celebrated with fireworks, outside Buddy’s Night Club on Sheriff Street early Sunday morning, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with unlawful possession of explosives.
Paul Daby, 50, of Lot 127 D’Aguiar Park, Ruimveldt, also in Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which said, on December 20, he had the explosives at his residence without, previously, obtaining a permit under the regulations governing the sale, purchase and possession of them.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, informed the Court that, after a search which yielded the explosive devices at his home, the defendant admitted that they belonged to him.
The Prosecutor said Police searched the house after receiving information from other persons who were charged with a similar offence.
Attorney-at-Law Mr. Mark Waldron, for the Defence, said Daby did not know he committed an offence when he was invited to the Police Station and shown boxes containing explosives, of which he denied knowledge in the presence of investigating ranks.
The lawyer said, at no time, did Daby claim ownership of the explosives.
But Telford, replying, maintained that a group of policemen went to the defendant’s home, where he made the admission that he owns the things discovered there and the Police have statements in a file to support the stated facts.
Daby was put on $25,000 bail and the case has been transferred to another Court for January 7.
On Monday thirteen other persons appeared in Court following the alleged illegal fireworks. Those defendants, Brian Gobin, Michael Madoo, Andre Banwani, Azad Khan, Otis Primo, Surandranauth Maniram, Suresh Singh, Ronald Weever, Nadia Dookram, Melissa Christianpaul, Roseaan De France, Amanda Mohabir and Mandy Deonarine (no addresses given) all faced charges of unlawful possession of explosives and causing public terror.
Particulars of the offences said, on December 19, at Buddy’s Night Club compound, they had several illegal explosives and caused public terror.
Each of the defendants was granted $50,000 bail.
The sound of rapid explosions ripped through the silence of Campbellville Ward early Sunday morning and disturbed the peace and quiet of sleeping residents, who fearing they heard gunfire, summoned Police to investigate.
