BACKGROUND
* The Golden Grove well was drilled in 1970 and rehabilitated in 2001, providing potable water to an estimated 15,000 persons. However, as a result of recent housing development in the area, the well is now required to supply an additional 8,000 persons with potable water.
* The inequitable distribution of service pressures, with the hard hit areas being the low income settlements some distant from the well, these poorer sections of the Grove/Diamond area are without potable water.
* Residents have to fetch water from the existing well, an exercise which can take as much as one hour for a five gallon pail of water, or purchase water, an expenditure they cannot afford.
* The new well will not only have the capacity to serve the existing community, but will also have the capacity to cater for a 50% increase in households.
* Guyana Water Incorporated’s system in each division is a continuous network of pipeline with control valves placed at strategic locations; this allows the entity to effectively maintain the system and make optimal use of the water resources.
* The existing network is connected to adjacent systems and is in good shape and will not require upgrading.
* Due to the present situation, a new borehole is needed, which will be drilled to a depth of approximately 210m with an upper casing diameter of 400mm. The screen diameter will be 200mm with an overall length of 20m.
* A borehole with these physical specifications would have a safe yield in excess of the required peak production of 250m3/hr. and the primary beneficiaries, an estimated 2000 households, would be the poorer residents of the Grove housing schemes that are more than 2km from the nearest pump.
New Developments
* This project will make it possible for the residents of the villages of Golden Grove, Diamond and Kaneville to get regular and adequate supplies of potable water for their daily use.
* Improve the flow of water and provide an adequate supply of potable water which will encourage better sanitation and other oral health practices. The stress of having to fetch and cope with limited quantities of water will also be removed.
* The Golden Grove / Diamond Well is located on the East Bank Demerara in Region #4.
* Approximately 8000 persons are expected to benefit from this well which will be done at an approximate cost of G$56M.
* This well is expected to be completed in 67 days by a Trinidadian based Contractor “Water and Oil Wells Services” and Consultants “CEMCO”.
* The new borehole for this Well will be to a depth of 210 meters or 689 feet with well casings and stainless steel borehole screens.
* Further, the system will incorporate submersible pumps with electrical control panels and discharge pipe assembly.
* A pump house and fencing will be constructed for the entire assembly.
* No maintenance will be needed for the first five years.
* During implementation of this project it is envisaged that approximately 300 persons will be employed.
Developmental Works Completed on East Bank Demerara
* In 2003, approximately 6000 persons benefited from the Construction of Roads, Drains and Structures (17 Km of Asphaltic Concrete main and secondary roads with, earthen roadside drains and culverts) Bk “Y” Grove at an approximate cost of G$238M.
* Approximately 11,000 persons benefitted from the Construction of Roads, Drains and Structures (27 km of Asphaltic Concrete main and secondary roads with, earthen roadside drains and culverts) Bk “X” Great Diamond at an approximate cost of G$368M.
* In 2007, approximately 5000 persons benefitted from the Construction of Roads, Drains and Structures (7,731 m of DBST roads, roadside drains and drainage culverts) Kaneville at an approximate cost of G$269M.
Current Development Works
* Approximately G$69M to be spent on treatment plant rehabilitation, distribution and transmission main rehabilitation in the areas of Grove, Diamond, Kaneville, Caledonia and Timehri, where approximately 30,000 persons are expected to benefit.
Future Developmental Works.
* Approximately G$514M to be spent on upgrade, distribution rehabilitation, metering, rehabilitation of discharge mains, transmission interlink and upgrade and procurement in the areas of Eccles, Bagotstown, Grove, Diamond, Sarah Johanna, Kuru Kururu, Caledonia, Land of Canan and Timehri where approximately 120,000 persons are expected to benefit.
