Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, has said that he is very pleased with the air cargo service launched recently by LIAT.
In an invited comment Minister Persaud stated, “We have been long awaiting an air cargo service that would serve the Caribbean, especially since there is great demand for Guyana’s produce in Caribbean countries”. Minister Persaud said that a reliable and competitive service is what is needed and he expects that Guyana’s farmers and exporters will take advantage of this service.
Guyana exports fresh produce to Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago. More than 95 per cent of Guyana’s non-traditional agricultural produce export is currently exported by sea.
General Manager of Guyana Marketing Corporation, Nizam Hassan, stated that an air cargo service can see the more “perishable produce”, such as fresh vegetables, being exported and being able to reach the market in a fresh state.
