Berbice arms cache
Twenty-five-year old Timothy Samson, who was allegedly found with a cache of weapons, including an Israeli made Uzi semi automatic rifle, denied four charges and was refused bail, following his appearance before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, yesterday. The defendant, who has had previous brushes with the law, is currently facing a possession of firearm charge for a .32 pistol which was found on the rafters of his home, where police had gone to conduct investigations in a robbery attack. The matter is currently pending at the Reliance Court in East Canje.
Meanwhile, at the court yesterday, twenty five year old Samson, faced four charges:
** on September 21, he resisted arrest from Constable Gladwin James, peace officer acting in the execution of his duty
* * resisted Constable Darrel Ramsay, a peace officer who was executing his duty
** had in his possession a firearm without a licence, to wit , two AK-47 rifles, a 12 gauge shot gun, and Uzi automatic weapon
** had in his possession ammunition without the relevant licences, to wit, three live twelve gauge cartridges.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, informed the court that while Samson was on bail on another matter, he committed the current offense.
In addition, Dayaram noted that the statutes governing firearm charges are specific and requested that bail be denied on the other charges, as the defendant might flee the jurisdiction.
In an unsuccessful bail application, attorney-at-law Charrandas Persaud said his client was attacked by men and he had a right to defend himself.
‘After he was subdued, he was taken to the Reliance Police station, there he learnt that the men in plain clothes, were policemen. They [the policemen], were in an unmarked vehicle, and did not produce their identification card. My client offered resistance. The matters are bailable offenses, and I am asking for a reasonable sum’.
Samson, who was handcuffed and shackled, wore a bandage on his head which his lawyer said covered injuries sustained from beatings by police officers.
The cases are transferred to the Reliance Court for hearing on October 20.
