Digicel Senior National Squash Championships 2016 … Arjoon, Joseph in winners’ row

THE Guyana Squash Association (GSA)-sponsored Digicel Senior National Squash Championships continued at the Georgetown Club Inc. courts in both the Men’s and Women’s Open draw along with matches in the Veterans’ categories.In the Men’s Open round of 16, No. 1 seed Alex Arjoon easily disposed of Rithew Saywack 11-5, 11-1, 11-4 while defending champion Nyron Joseph was a comfortable winner over Darren McDonald 11-4, 11-3, 11-1.
Kristian Jeffrey made light work of Jonathan Antczak only conceding one point, the scores being 11-0, 11-0, 11-1. Jason Ray Khalil outplayed Anthony Islam 11-4, 11-2, 1-/8.
In the match of the evening former Caribbean junior champion Javed Alli had to call on all of his years of experience when he turned back the challenge of current national junior player Alec Melville in five tough games.
Javed won the first two games 11-6, 11-4 but Alec won a close third game 11-9 and then breezed through the fourth without dropping a point, winning 11-0. At 10-all in the fifth it was anyone’s game, but Javed won the next two points to take the match 12-10.
In the Women’s Open quarterfinals No.1 seed Ashley Khalil dominated Rebecca Low winning 11-3, 11-1, 11-0 while in the matchup of former Caribbean junior champions, Akeila Wiltshire defeated Victoria Arjoon 12-10, 11-7, 11-6.
Taylor Fernandes beat Makeda Harding 11-8, 11-3, 11-2 while Larissa Wiltshire crushed Maya Collins 11-3, 11-2, 1-2.
In the Men’s Veterans: Javed Alli outplayed David Fernandes 11-3, 11-4, 1-2, Medhi Ramdhani beat Douglas De Groot 9-11, 11-8, 119, 11-8 and Garfield Wiltshire upstaged Robin Low 12-10, 11-6, 11-4.
Matches commence at 18:00hrs daily with the finals set for Sunday July 3 from 11:00hrs.
