I REFER to two private dailies, especially the front page of the Guyana Times, that illustrates a gathering of Minister Irfaan Ali and staff colourfully decked out in traditional African wear in honour of Emancipation observances.
The specific to note is that both these portrayals point out a multi-race collection. This form of acknowledgement of the nation’s individual, ethnic cultural commemoration began sometime in the 1990s with the Private Sector.
It was very much appreciated, although a very well-known rights activist is on record via a letter to the print media, objecting to this cultural solidarity, with reference to the cross- cultural dressing aspect.
Now, it is heartening to observe the Public Sector, moreso, a cabinet functionary, as part of this display. This is heartening and even encouraging for a nation that has to cope with the challenges of race.
And as we celebrate another important observance of a significant historical event, let us be thankful that as a multi-race nation, that we continue to enjoy very good peace and harmonious relations with one another, notwithstanding those who are still bent on sowing seeds of racial division.
The latter, whoever they are, must understand that such an offensive doctrine can only push us all over the precipice to our eternal doom, squandering away all the gains made so far under the PPP/C administration.
We can only be damned by succeeding generations, especially our children for allowing such a tragedy.
As we celebrate another Emancipation observance, let us understand this occasion in a much wider context: That every Guyanese race group has the right to their particular cultural lineage and heritage and concomitant celebrations.
Such is their inalienable right. But, also, let us ALL understand, such must not allow ourselves to be shackled by the narrow confines of cultural prejudices and hate, that can divide us as a people, and which unfortunately do not allow its dangerous adherents to look beyond such an enclave.
We as Guyanese must be wiser from our past, and understand the real meaning of the words that form our national motto. Surely, we do not want a local Rwanda nor a Serbia scenario here.
Let US ALL AS GUYANESE, THEREFORE STRIVE GENUINELY TO BEQUEATH TO OUR SUCCEEDING GENERATIONS A NATION SHORN OF THE SCOURGE OF RACE.
HAPPY EMANCIPATION TO ALL!
