Air services agreement with Kuwait could increase travel opportunities

– Minister Benn
THE air services agreement signed here this week between Guyana and Kuwait is meant to allow the two countries to develop bilateral air services and promote international cooperation in the field, Transport and Hydraulics Minister Robeson Benn said yesterday.
He told the Guyana Chronicle the accord he signed with Kuwait’s General Director of Civil Aviation, Mr. Bader Boutaiban, will allow Guyana to position itself to take advantage of opportunities that could be created for people from Kuwait to travel to Guyana and vice versa.
He explained that Guyana has similar agreements with other countries, but this latest does mean that persons will be flying directly to Kuwait via connecting flights.
Minister Benn said details of the agreement will be released soon.
The signing of this and four other agreements at the Office of the President complex in Georgetown Monday was the highpoint of a brief visit by Prime Minister of Kuwait, His Highness, Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohamed Al-Ahmad Al-Jabar Al-Sabah.
An agreement for economic and technical cooperation was signed by Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh and Kuwait’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Mustafa Jasem Al Shamali. This seeks to encourage private sector cooperation through the establishment of joint ventures.
The two Finance Ministers also signed a second agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and on capital.
Another for bilateral trade was signed between Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Kuwait’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Ahmad Al-Haroun. This allows the two countries to develop trade relations, expand the exchange of goods and services, encourage participation in trade fairs and international markets and exchanges of commercial delegations.
She also signed an agreement establishing a joint commission with Mr. Khaled Al Jarallah, Undersecretary in the Kuwait Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The Kuwaiti team flew out of Guyana Monday night to Brazil to continue a tour of the region.
