Picketing demonstrations over Police fatal shooting of schoolboy

MEMBERS of the victim’s family, other parents and students yesterday staged a peaceful picketing exercise in front of Patentia Secondary School, West Bank Demerara, where schoolboy Kelvin Fraser was shot and killed by Police on Monday.
The group, numbering about 50 persons, also demonstrated outside Leonora Police Station, where they carried placards expressing their concerns.

They were joined by freed treason accused Mark Benschop, who showed his support to the grieving clan.
The demonstrations followed a visit, Tuesday, by a Police delegation, including Commissioner Henry Greene, ‘D’ Division Commander Christopher Griffith and Head of the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), retired Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Jameer, to the home of the deceased.
They met the dead teen’s mother, Sharon Fraser and relatives gave the assurance that a full investigation is being done and the policeman shooter remains under close arrest pending the outcome.
The woman told the Guyana Chronicle that the other demonstrators arrived at her home yesterday morning, already armed with pickets.
She lamented that her only son was taken away from her in such a brutal manner and said it is very difficult to accept the fact that he is no more.
Her other child, a 13-year-old girl, is also trying to cope, as well as Kelvin’s  girlfriend, Karen Hermanstein, a student at the same school, whom he had visited minutes before being killed.
The surviving teen told the Guyana Chronicle Kelvin was supposed to accompany her to Georgetown and buy her a present for her 17th birthday on Monday.
She said only became aware of the shooting when other students started shouting and ran out of school and she ventured out to see what was happening.
However, by the time she reached the scene, the body had been taken away by the Police.
She said Kelvin had gone to the school so the two of them could confront another girl from whom he was going to sever a relationship but the bell rang and she suggested that he return home, not knowing it was the last time she was going to see him alive.

False

She said the allegation that he was smoking marijuana is false as he did not do drugs and have many friends.
She said he spent most of his time with her and, when they were at their respective homes, they telephoned each other frequently.
According to her, Kelvin had plans, one of which was to become a qualified electrician while she completed Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations before they got married.
A post mortem is expected to be performed on his corpse tomorrow.
Police, in a press release late Monday night, said they  are investigating the fatal shooting of Fraser, 16, by a rank who was, at the time, responding to a report of a group of men molesting female students at Patentia Secondary School.
The release said initial investigations indicate that the Headmistress had made a report to a member of the Community Policing Group who, in turn, informed the Police at Wales Station, resulting in a prompt response.
The release said, on arrival at the school, six youths were pointed out as the perpetrators and, on seeing the Police, four of them ran away while two were arrested.
The Police said ranks pursued the four and caught up with Kelvin at Third Street, Patentia Housing Scheme, where, during efforts to arrest him, a scuffle ensued between himself and a rank, who was armed with a service shotgun that went off, hitting him on the chest.
The wounded lad was taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
