THE final day of action in the Inter Services Annual Athletics Championships (ISAAC), yesterday, was packed with close wins and intense rivalry, that included sizzling sprint wins for Olympian Winston George, and a tight win in the men’s 4x100m relay, as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) clinched the overall Championships win, over the Guyana Police Force, to successfully defend their title when the event concluded at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.Earlier, President David Granger attended the opening and took the Presidential salute .The President also handed over the first and second place trophies for the march-past to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF), respectively.

The President’s message to the GDF, the GPF, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), who participated in the event, was that “the championships can be an important vehicle to promote respectful relations amongst the institutions and individuals who collectively, constitute the Joint Services
Springing into the final day’s competition off a 13 point lead, GDF was already poised for the win, needing only to keep arch rivals, GPF at bay and maintain the position at the helm. Clocking win after win, that was an easy task for the Army men. The soldiers ended with 813 points to stand up against the 791 points racked up by the Police.
For third place, Guyana Prison Service managed to take an upset win over the Guyana Fire Service. Prison ended with 88 points, just over the 85 points that Fire gathered. In the rear was City Constabulary with 81 points.
Not even the stunning sprint wins in the men’s 100m, 200m and 400m by champion boy, George, could keep GPF from going down against GDF, who took top wins in the 1500m’s, women’s 100m and 200m sprints and men’s high jump.
George won the champion male title after amassing 30 points, just below him with 28 points was GDF’s Cleveland Forde.
The champion female title went to Natreena Hopper, who amassed 30 points. Women’s 100m winner Aniquah Powley shared second place with women’s 1500m champion Andrea Foster after both of them secure 28 points.
George earned his well deserved win champion boy after fine displays in his sprints.
In the 100m and 200m, George clocked 9.9 seconds and 20.40 seconds respectively.
In the men’s 1500m GDF’s Cleveland Forde and Andrea Foster claimed the first wins of the day. Forde top spot in the 1500m was just another rudimentary win for the Little Kenyan, but it was Police’s Quacy Morian’s come from behind second place finish that had the crowd in excitement. Forde clocked 4:02.1 to take the win, while Morian finished in a time of 4:04.9s.
GDF’s Hooper put a stop to her team mate Aniquah Powley’s hopes of sprint double win. Powley, who copped the women’s 100m in a time of 11.8s, could not oveecome the lanky Hooper in the 200m. Hooper blazed past he finishig line in 28.10s, to shoot in ahead of Powley who clocked 24.70s.
