VENEZUELAN nationals and their friends in Guyana yesterday participated in a wreath-laying ceremony to mark Venezuela’s 200th year of independence. The function, at the Venezuelan Institute of Culture and Cooperation, honoured the founder of that nation, Simón Bolívar, whose political legacy made him a very important figure in South American history.
Because of his image, Bolívar became central to the national identities of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
Consequently, Bolivia and Venezuela (Bolívarian Republic) are both named for Bolívar.
For the occasion yesterday, Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana, Mr. Dario Morandy was accompanied by Venezuelan Military Attache, General Roberto De Luca Varesano, in placing wreaths.
Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, Mr. Raul Cortazar Marrero was also present, along with Guyanese representatives.
