AT 15 minutes past four yesterday, Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson was still in her Chambers at the Georgetown Magistrate’s court as it was believed that Chandra Narine Sharma was going to appear on carnal knowledge charges.
But he never showed up. Lawyer for the Channel Six television owner and leader of the Justice For All Party, Mr. Nigel Hughes, also turned up in Court One where Sharma was expected to appear.
Reporters were also very much involved in the wait for Sharma as a representative from almost every media house was present until late yesterday afternoon.
When contacted on the telephone yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hughes told this newspaper that police officers were not communicating with Sharma’s lawyers despite their requests to be informed of any developments.
Hughes said it is his hope that Sharma will be brought to court this morning.
“They have not indicated a single thing to me. I don’t know if it’s one, two or three charges,” the lawyer said when asked about the amount of charges that were laid against Sharma.
Sharma was a patient at the Caribbean Heart Institute at the Georgetown Public Hospital, under police guard and was said to be recovering.
He collapsed at the Brickdam Police station on Thursday and had to be rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery for a heart condition earlier this year.
Following the circulation of an affidavit by a girl who claimed that the businessman had raped her repeatedly for years, and a report to the Police on Thursday, Sharma was asked to report to the Police for questioning.
He showed up at Eve Leary with his lawyer and was taken to the Brickdam Police Station where he collapsed.
It is alleged that the girl, now 13, was repeatedly raped by Sharma ever since she was seven. The girl also stated that Sharma did the same thing to her siblings and they would receive $2,000 per week after sexual intercourse.
The girl added in the statement that she and her four sisters were all raped and sexually abused by Sharma over a period of time.
The two younger sisters, ages five and nine, have been located and are in the protective custody of the Child Care and Protection Agency.
The girls’ mother, Premattie Danraj, reportedly handed them into the care of a relative and has still not come forward to assist with investigations.
Anyone with information about Danraj is asked to contact the police on telephone numbers 226-2917, 225-8196, 225-6411, 226-6978, 226-1326 or 911.
Meanwhile, Director of the Agency, Mrs. Ann Greene, said the two girls, along with the 13-year-old who made the allegation via a sworn affidavit against Mr. Chandra Narine Sharma, are undergoing medical examinations.
