Wolmer’s, Holmwood

are toast of Champs
KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) – Two maroon-and-gold clad teams, Wolmer’s Boys and Holmwood girls, are the champions of Jamaica’s high school championships.


Both team titles went down to the final events on Saturday’s exciting final day at the National Stadium.

In the end, Holmwood Technical, who trailed Edwin Allen for most of the Championships, pulled off victory, winning 273-1/3 points to 258. But it was even closer on the boys’ side.

Heading into the final event, the boys’ 4×400 metres, Wolmer’s and Calabar were tied on 198-1/2 points which meant the higher place finisher in the event would win Champs.

As it turned out to be Wolmer’s, who crossed the finish line second for 10 points, leaving Calabar way back in seventh for only three points.

The final points tally saw Wolmer’s on 208-1/2, Calabar 201-1/2, Kingston College 192, Jamaica College, and St. Jago 110.

Forte of Wolmer’s won the senior boys’ 200m in 21.32, and Antonique Campbell of Herbert Morrison sprinted 23.96 on the girls’ side, as they both completed sprint doubles.

Shericka Jackson of Vere Technical was also on the winner’s podium twice after taking the Under-17 girls’ 200 and 400 metres double with times of 23.98 and 53.74.

Holmwood’s Chris-Ann Gordon was also impressive, after winning the Under-15 girls’ 400 in 53.62 and the 800 in two minutes, 12.03 seconds.

On the track, three records were broken on the final day with Manchester High’s Natoya Goule the only triple winner of the meet, and Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield a double record-breaker.

Goule won the senior girls’ 1500 in a record 4 mins, 29.81 secs, the 800 in 2 mins, 06.44 secs, along with the 3000 Open in 10 mins, 28.60 secs.

Campbell ran 14 mins, 18.55 secs to break the boys’ 5000 Open record to add to his 1,500 record of 3 mins, 45.54 secs for senior boys on Friday.

In the 4x100m, Edwin Allen’s Under-14 girls ran 47.58 to set a new record, so too did Jamaica College’s Under-14 boys’ team with their 43.04.

Holmwood sprint medley girls were also in record-breaking form with their 4 mins, 01.92 secs.

The Championships held extra significance this year as Jamaica continue their preparations for the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, from July 19 to 25.
