OFFICERS foiled a jailbreak at the New Amsterdam Prison in Berbice on Tuesday morning.
Acting on a tip off, they went to the Solitary Block where they discovered a two feet diameter hole in the eastern wall covered with a mattress and a wet sheet.
They also unearthed cutlasses, improvised weapons called ‘jukkers’ and steel rods shaped into crowbars, all on the middle flat of the three-storey building that houses challenged prisoners.
Occupants of the number two dormitory, which is on the upper flat of the edifice, are suspected to have been involved in the escape plot, as part of their dwelling was destroyed, allowing inmates from the upper flat to access the Solitary Block.
The planned escapees had almost completed their plans when a fellow inmate informed on them.
If their scheme had succeeded, the getaways would have jumped the eastern zinc fence and go on to Winkle Road, East of the penitentiary, where there is a regular flow of public transport.
However, Police are investigating the botched effort.
