A 42-year-old man of Lot 119 ‘B’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was yesterday refused bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan on a break and enter and larceny charge.
Vernon Primus pleaded not guilty to the charge that said between November 2 and 3 at Lot 33 Sheriff and Dadanawa Streets, Section ‘K’ Campbellville, Georgetown, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Waynewright Orderson and stole therein two television sets valued at$160,000; one stereo set system speakers valued at $ 66,000 and other items valued at over $2.4M.
Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones opposed bail on the grounds that the defendant gave the court conflicting addresses, since he told the police he resides at Lot 123 ‘B’ Field Sophia. Jones also objected on the basis of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the charge and the fact that he was caught inside the house.
Primus told the court that he is a scrap- iron dealer and on Monday he was passing the yard when the gate was open. He said he was admiring some of the scrap metal in the yard when a truck with some Tactical Services Unit police officers (TSU) pulled up. He said the ranks asked him what he was doing there and carried out a search on him.
The unrepresented defendant said no one took any fingerprints from him and nowhere had been broken into.
However, the prosecution’s objection was upheld and the matter stands adjourned to November 24 for statements.
