DRILLING COMPLETED FOR NEW $84M WELL AT AMELIA’S WARD

The drilling process for the construction of the new $84M well at Amelia’s Ward was completed on Monday by Island Water, contracted by Nabi and Sons to dig the Well which will service over 5,000 households in the rapidly expanding housing scheme in the town of Linden.

However, the Well is not finished, as a lot of developmental work needs to be done at the new site to have it operationalised. According to a GWI source, the Well is not finished until it is commissioned.

An official admitted that the drilling company had completed their drilling operation after finding water at a depth of about 200 feet, and now there is need for the sourcing of a submersible pump, among other things, as other works have to be done at the location.

The ever increasing population in this housing scheme has pushed the demand for potable water in the area where the existing Well is incapable of supplying the needs of the community.

Reports are that government, through the Guyana Water Inc., has invested more than $210M to upgrade the water transmission system in Region 10 (Upper Demerara / Upper Berbice) with the intention of providing an improved and efficient service with higher capacity to the entire community. The water company also recently installed a new booster and submersible pump to increase the pressure of water in the area which is the largest housing scheme in Guyana.

Initially, the new well was to be dug at a depth of 600 feet, but the water table was found at 200 feet, according to the contractors, while the pressure is targeted to see 100 cubic metres or 1.5 mega litres of water per day, and the entire project is expected to be completed by March. These interventions are expected to produce water at approximately 550 gallons per minute.
