— August arrivals climb 5.6%; year-to-date figures up 11%

GUYANA is projected to welcome more than 500,000 visitors by the end of 2026, as the country continues to record growth in visitor arrivals, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
The Ministry announced on Friday that Guyana welcomed 48,582 visitors in August 2026, representing a 5.6 per cent increase when compared with August 2025.
According to the Ministry, visitor arrivals from January to August 2026 were also 11 per cent higher than during the corresponding period in 2025, continuing the country’s strong tourism growth trajectory.
Leisure travel remained the largest contributor to arrivals, accounting for 62 per cent of visitors, followed by business travel at 14 per cent and other forms of travel at 24 per cent.
The United States remained Guyana’s largest source market, accounting for 39 per cent of visitors, followed by the Caribbean at 33 per cent.
Latin America accounted for nine per cent of arrivals, Canada seven per cent, Europe five per cent and other markets six per cent.
The Ministry said the increase in arrivals was supported by several major activities, including the Global Super League (GSL) cricket tournament, which extended into early August and attracted international teams and fans.
The tournament further reinforced Guyana’s growing reputation as a sporting destination.
The return of diaspora visitors during the August vacation period also contributed significantly to arrivals, reflecting the strength of family and cultural ties.
According to the Ministry, these activities have helped strengthen Guyana’s image as a destination that combines cultural experiences, sporting attractions and community connections, while maintaining momentum towards the projected year-end visitor figure.
Several major activities are still scheduled for the remainder of 2026, including the State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC), along with annual observances and events surrounding Diwali, Tourism Awareness Month and the Christmas season.
The Ministry also pointed to the recently announced State Visit by Their Majesties, The King and Queen, among the major upcoming events expected to attract attention to Guyana’s tourism product.
