The drivers of a motor lorry and a minibus involved in the fatal accident on Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, which claimed the life of a 36-year-old Essequibo Coast resident, have been remanded to prison on charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

Kord Sobers, 55, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, the driver of motor lorry GAF 1093, and Colin Cumberbatch, 31, of Kitty, Georgetown, the driver of minibus BAH 9443, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The men were charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving, contrary to Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act.

The charge stems from the fatal accident which occurred on June 20 along Providence Public Road and resulted in the death of Ruddy Raymond, 36, of Jonestown, Lima, Essequibo Coast.

The indictable charges were read to the defendants, who were not required to plead.

Both men were remanded to prison and the matters were adjourned to July 10 for report.

According to police, the accident involved a minibus, a motor lorry and a motor car. Investigators alleged that the motor lorry made a sharp right turn into the path of the northbound minibus, resulting in a collision.

The minibus subsequently struck the median, crossed into the opposite carriageway, toppled onto its side and collided with a motor car.

Raymond, who was a passenger in the minibus, was pronounced dead at the scene, while several other persons sustained injuries.
