MINISTER within the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy, has accused the political opposition of misrepresenting the facts surrounding the Friendship land debacle, which is a dispute between a private landowner and persons claiming to be occupants of the land.

The minister in a post on his Facebook page, pointed out what he deemed as a “disturbing trend of disinformation and misinformation” emanating from opposition figures surrounding the ongoing land matter.

“At no time, as is being claimed by mischievous elements of the opposition, has the PPP/C government had any hand in the removal of the squatters on the Friendship land. This mischief coincides with the opposition’s divisive strategy which continues to be part of their playbook and for which they have had little rewards, as the majority of Guyanese insist on an approach of unity. This yearning and embrace of national unity is demonstrated daily in our national achievements, inclusive of an environment of peace and tranquility. Proudly, Guyanese continue to reject disunity,” Minister McCoy wrote.

The minister further stated that the opposition has reintroduced their “propaganda” surrounding other squatter evictions from private properties such as Hill Foot, among others, solely for the purpose of misrepresenting the facts and promoting division.

He wrote: “A progressive opposition would be keen about promoting education and awareness for our people and not to mislead them into directions that are either counter-productive or non-beneficial.”
