MOLMP clarifies reports on fire at former Ministry facility in New Amsterdam

THE Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning (MOLMP) has taken note of reports circulating on social media regarding a fire at a building formerly associated with the Ministry of Labour on Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

According to a press release issued by the MOLMP on Sunday, this incident is most unfortunate and thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The release noted that while the ministry regrets the damage to the property, it must be further clarified that regional operations of the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning have been relocated to another facility, located at Grant 228 Vryman Erven, New Amsterdam, Berbice, and this relocation has been in effect since February 2025.

This new facility was commissioned in February last year by former Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, and now houses the Department of Labour in Region Six and the Board of Industrial Training’s Development and Certification Centre and Office.

The ministry confirmed reports that the affected building has not housed or facilitated any of its regional services to citizens since that date.

The public is hereby reassured that all services remain uninterrupted and continue to be available at the current Vryman Erven edifice.

For any inquiries or assistance, please contact the New Amsterdam location at Telephone: 500-2185. The understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders is deeply appreciated, the release said.
