A 42-year-old farmer of Jawarie Village, South Pakaraimas, has been sentenced to prison and fined after pleading guilty to possessing two illegal firearms uncovered during a police investigation into a reported incident of larceny.
Gerald Isaacs appeared on Monday before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence, contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05.
He was fined $50,000 and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the first count, and fined a further $50,000 and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the second count.
The charges stem from police enquiries into a report of Simple Larceny made at Karasabai Village, South Pakaraimas.
Police ranks from the Karasabai Police Station responded to the report around 14:20hrs on Sunday, December 21, in relation to an alleged larceny said to have occurred two days earlier.
As part of the investigation, ranks proceeded to a residence at Jawarie Village, where a search of the premises was conducted. During that search, the police discovered one .36-gauge shotgun and one 20-gauge shotgun in a bedroom area.
Isaacs was arrested and escorted, along with the firearms, to the Lethem Police Station. The weapons were lodged as evidence, and the investigation later resulted in formal charges.
