THE Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc. (HMGI) recently distributed 100 food hampers to senior citizens and persons living with disabilities across communities in Berbice.
According to a press release from the organisation, this initiative specifically reached individuals who are shut-in, bedridden, abandoned, neglected, or living in isolation, and many of whom face ongoing challenges in accessing necessities and social support.
“While Christmas is traditionally a time of celebration, connection, and togetherness, it can be a difficult and lonely period for those living on the margins of society. For many seniors and persons with disabilities, limited mobility, economic challenges, and social isolation often intensify during the holiday season,” the organisation said.
Through this outreach, Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc. sought to respond to these realities by providing essential food support while also offering reassurance, dignity, and human connection to those who are too often forgotten.
At the core of this initiative was HMGI’s commitment to compassion, inclusion, and service. The organisation recognised that addressing immediate needs such as food security is only one part of supporting vulnerable populations.
“Equally important is the message that every individual matters and deserves care, respect, and acknowledgement. Each food hamper represented not only practical assistance, but also a symbol of solidarity and hope during a time when many recipients feel unseen,” the organisation said.
Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc. encouraged communities to view the Christmas season as an opportunity to reflect on shared values such as empathy, generosity, and social responsibility.
The organisation said: “Meaningful change is often achieved through simple acts of kindness checking on an elderly neighbour, offering support to someone facing hardship, or extending care to individuals living with disabilities. These actions strengthen social bonds and contribute to healthier, more inclusive communities.”
Through its representative, Suresh Sugrim, Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc. reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to educating, empowering, and uplifting individuals and families as they work to break the cycle of poverty.
The organisation said it strongly believes that education is a critical tool for long-term transformation and economic independence.
In addition to its educational initiatives, HMGI said it continues to serve vulnerable groups, including persons living with disabilities, low-income working families, single parents, survivors of abuse and gender-based violence, and families in crisis.
Its programmes are designed to support healing, strengthen family relationships, and promote resilience at both the individual and community levels.
“On behalf of Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc., we extend heartfelt appreciation to every donor, partner, volunteer, and supporter who contributed their time, resources, and trust. Your continued support enables us to reach those most in need and to expand our efforts to build stronger, more compassionate communities throughout Guyana.
“As the Christmas season draws to a close and we look ahead to the new year, Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc. remains committed to service, dignity, and opportunity for all. We extend our best wishes for peace, health, and hope to every household and reaffirm our dedication to working collaboratively toward a more inclusive and caring society. We would like to thank Dr. Bobby Ramroop, New GPC; Dr., Mohin Persaud, Nand Persaud Company & Limited; and Frank A. Sanichar, Suri Trading,” the organisation said.
