THE University of Guyana’s School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI) has announced the introduction of a Master of Science degree in Transportation Management, set to commence in February 2026, as part of efforts to address emerging challenges in transportation, logistics and infrastructure management within a rapidly modernising economy.
According to the university, the programme was developed in response to increased demands arising from expanded road construction, growing vehicular ownership, housing development along major corridors and the need for improved transport and port systems. The 39-credit programme is designed to be completed over two years on a full-time basis or three years part-time.
The curriculum will cover a wide range of subject areas, including transportation policy and planning, artificial intelligence and transportation planning, public transport management, transportation security, and transportation geography and environmental considerations. Students will also be exposed to practical training through attachments with selected public and private sector agencies.
Dean of SEBI, Professor Leyland Lucas, said the programme aims to equip professionals with the skills required to manage complex transportation systems in a transforming society. “Difficulties in transportation have both economic and non-economic costs and affect the competitiveness of our society.
With major expansion in housing along the main corridors, increased civilian vehicular ownership, significant road construction projects, and the need for enhanced port capabilities, persons must be trained to properly develop and manage our transportation system,” Professor Lucas said.
He added that Guyana’s rapid transformation demands a new approach to transportation management.
Professor Lucas also acknowledged the contributions of several university colleagues to the development of the programme, including Deans Paulette Bynoe and Linda Johnson-Bhola, as well as Drs. Jana Sarran and Oluwasinaayomi Faith Kasim.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin, welcomed the initiative, describing the programme as a timely response to national and regional training needs. She noted that it forms part of a suite of new academic offerings being developed by the institution for early 2026.
The programme will be delivered in a hybrid format and will be open to qualified graduates of accredited tertiary institutions. The university said both local and international faculty will be engaged, as SEBI works to address existing skills gaps while building local academic capacity.
