THE University of Guyana (UG) has announced a major expansion of its academic offerings, launching new high-demand degree programmes in the medical, engineering, and marine sciences fields. This initiative aims to provide increased access to education and address the nation’s demand for skilled professionals across multiple sectors.
The expansion includes a new Pre-Medical Sciences programme, as well as Civil Engineering and Construction and Infrastructure degrees, which will initially be offered in Regions 2, 3, 6, and 9, outside the capital. The move is intended to allow students to pursue critical career pathways closer to their homes while supporting regional development.
In a strategic collaboration with global industry leader Maersk and other maritime and environmental partners, UG is also launching a new suite of marine-related programmes through its Institute for Marine and Riverine Ecologies and Economies (IMAREE) in Berbice. The programmes are designed to strengthen Guyana’s capacity in maritime operations, marine engineering, logistics, and coastal sustainability—sectors seen as central to the country’s growing economy.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo have emphasised the importance of aligning education with national development priorities. The University’s expansion reflects this vision by creating opportunities for Guyanese to fill high-demand jobs across the country.
In addition to these programmes, UG continues to offer advanced studies in human and industrial relations, transportation management, and taxation. The University has also doubled its intake for high-demand courses for the 2025 academic year, accommodating all qualified applicants and raising the student population to approximately 15,000.
Applications for the new Pre-Medical Sciences, Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure, and upcoming Marine programmes will open within the next week, with classes scheduled to begin in early 2026. UG’s leadership describes the initiative as a critical step in expanding access to state-funded education and fostering the development of a skilled workforce for Guyana’s evolving economy.
