A 48-year-old man from Better Hope, East Coast Demerara was sentenced to six months in prison and fined $90,000 after pleading guilty to a narcotics trafficking charge, on Monday.
Quasey Alves, known as “Chiney Man,” of Lot 86 Third Street, Better Hope, appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court #1. He was charged with possession of 63.5 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Alves admitted to the offence when the charge was read to him, after which Magistrate Nurse imposed both the custodial sentence and financial penalty, in keeping with provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
He was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence.
