CONSTRUCTION is ongoing on the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Access Road Project, a major infrastructure initiative designed to improve community access to electricity across East Coast and East Bank Demerara, Region Four.
On Wednesday, Dr. Martin Pertab, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), conducted a site visit to review progress on the project. He was accompanied by Mr. Gladwin Charles, Director of Community Development, and engineers Anthony Ragnauth, Raefer Clifton, Shenelle Reid, along with other technical staff.
During the visit, Dr. Pertab engaged contractors and emphasised the importance of completing the project on time. “It’s important that we complete that project so that we can have electricity readily available to provide power to existing and new communities,” he said.
The access road will connect South Ruimveldt to the GPL substation at Columbia (Mahaica) and is divided into 12 lots, with each lot covering approximately 4 kilometres of carriageway. The total estimated investment for the project is around $5.58 billion.
Dr. Pertab visited Lot 6 (Enterprise to Victoria) to assess current progress and proactively address any challenges that have arisen. Contractors have reported encounters with farmers along the route, and the CH&PA will be working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant agencies to resolve these issues efficiently and ensure the project moves forward.
In addition to the access road project, Dr. Pertab also visited the industrial site at Enmore, East Coast Demerara, to assess ongoing progress.
The GPL Access Road Project is expected to significantly enhance electricity delivery and support both existing and new communities in Region Four.
