For the first time in Guyana’s political history, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) – long regarded as the bastion of the People’s National Congress (PNC) led- A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition – has been claimed by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
According to the official Election Returns for the district, the PPP/C secured 87,536 votes in the General Elections and 87,018 votes in the Regional Elections, outpacing APNU, which tallied 46,956 votes (General) and 46,772 votes (Regional).
This represents a major break from decades of voting patterns that consistently gave APNU and its predecessors dominance in the country’s most populous electoral district and rule over the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown.
Also making a significant mark was the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), which captured 41,607 votes (General) and 41,930 votes (Regional) – a performance that came largely at the expense of APNU’s traditional base.
Other parties such as the Alliance for Change (AFC), Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), and Forward Guyana Movement recorded smaller but noteworthy shares.
Overall, 182,209 valid ballots were cast in the General Elections and 182,725 in the Regional Elections in Demerara-Mahaica.
