Dear Editor,
AS we approach the critical general and regional elections on September 1, 2025, I write to my fellow Guyanese grounded in conviction and fact.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) stand before you with a record of transformative governance—one that has guided our nation from obscurity to global prominence, and one worth upholding.
1. A nation transformed by responsible governance
Under President Ali’s leadership, fuelled by Guyana’s nascent oil boom, our economy has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis. From 2019 to 2024, GDP surged from just over US $5 billion to nearly US $25 billion—a nearly fivefold increase. This makes Guyana the fastest-growing economy in the world, and the world watches us with admiration.
On the ground, this wealth has manifested in visible improvements to daily life—widened highways, new schools, hospitals, malls, and the landmark four-lane Demerara River Bridge—all symbols of progress that make Guyana proud.
2. Infrastructure, social programmes, and economic diversification
Beyond bricks and mortar, the Ali administration has pursued inclusive policies. Initiatives include free university tuition, expanded housing, annual pay raises, cash transfers, and other social safety nets.
At the same time, the government’s focus on diversifying the economy—preparing for a post-oil future—underscores its long-term vision and commitment to resilient development.
3. International recognition for leadership and innovation
President Ali’s leadership has not gone unnoticed globally. He has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards: Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (India), Global Inspirational Leadership Award (UN), IICA Agriculture & Food-Security Award, Global African Leadership Award (Ghana), Legacy Award (UWI), People’s Choice Caribbean Global Leader (London), Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service, and the UC Berkeley Global Leadership Award.
These accolades are not just personal achievements. They are proof that Guyana is rising, that our President has elevated us on the global stage, and that we are a democracy others look to with respect.
4. Political landscape and the opposition’s agenda
Other political parties and their leaders have shown their true intentions. They do not want to build Guyana’s future; they want to have a majority in Parliament only to block progress, frustrate development, and weaken Guyana’s forward march.
The opposition remains divided—Aubrey Norton’s APNU/AFC, scarred by its 2020 election failures, and Azruddin Mohamed’s movement, tainted by U.S. sanctions and controversy. These groups cannot inspire confidence or deliver results.
5. Our choice for continued progress
This election is not just about politics—it is about patriotism. It is about showing the world that Guyana is united, proud, and committed to democracy.
When you cast your vote tomorrow: You can choose continuity—sustaining the transformation of our economy, infrastructure, and social framework; You can endorse forward-looking governance with a global reputation; and you can safeguard stability during this pivotal moment—where the wrong turn could jeopardize everything we’ve built.
That is why I urge you: come out and vote in numbers for the PPP/C. Give President Dr. Irfaan Ali that historic 40-plus seats in Parliament, ensuring a strong mandate to continue Guyana’s transformation.
A vote for the PPP/C is a vote for yourself, your family, your children, and your grandchildren. It is a vote to make Guyana proud.
Sincerely,
Halim Khan
