Police confirm Linden teacher was shot twice by abusive ex-partner

With a bullet to the face and another to the back of the head, 26-year-old mother of three and teacher Jenel Pollydore was executed in front of relatives and wedding guests on Saturday night, a brutal end to a cycle of alleged domestic abuse that she tried to escape.

The tragic incident occurred around 21:20 hrs at the R & R Hotel in Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, where Pollydore was attending a wedding reception.

Her estranged partner and the father of her three-month-old baby, 21-year-old Shaka Vaughn Phillips of Amelia’s Ward, is the prime suspect.

According to investigators, the couple shared a home until the abuse became unbearable. Pollydore eventually separated from Phillips and obtained a restraining order, but it did little to stop the harassment.

Chilling WhatsApp voice messages, now circulating on social media, revealed the extent of Pollydore ’s fear and frustration in the days leading up to her death.

“He started to get mad, you know, always trying to torment me and rowing. I told him, ‘man leh we done’. He stared causing a set of problems [in my home] for me and my grandmother is hear and she start taking on and start getting sick,” she said.

“After he left here he still start tormenting me and coming all hours. I went and get the restraining order and he still ain’t staying away. If I go anywhere, he is want follow me… All my family saying to change my sim and block him. But I say man, I don’t want to keep his child away from him.”

“But I told him, once you accept that we done and move on with his life and do what he has to do, it would be better for he and could a better understanding. But no, he wants study what I’m doing with my life… He is allowing the ignorance in his emotion to lead and that’s what causing he… I can’t even go out an hour without him calling and looking for me.”

On Saturday night, those warnings turned fatal.

According to Pollydore ’s niece, Malika Pollydore, the teacher was standing at the entrance of the hotel when Phillips confronted her about unanswered phone calls.

An argument erupted. Phillips allegedly pulled a handgun and fired.

Pollydore ran toward the hotel’s pool area, but Phillips chased after her and discharged two more rounds before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

Police arrived shortly after and found Pollydore lying motionless.

She sustained two gunshot wounds, one to the right side of her face and another to the back of her head. Two 9mm spent shells were recovered from the scene.

She was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Phillips remains on the run. Police have since launched a manhunt as the investigation continues.
