THE University of Guyana (UG) on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, launched its 17th Annual Reading is Fun programme at the UG Library, Turkeyen Campus, continuing a longstanding tradition of promoting literacy among vulnerable children.

Supported once again by Unicomer Guyana, through its Courts Optical division, the initiative will benefit over 90 children from communities including Sophia, Cummings Lodge, Industry, and other surrounding areas.

Running until August 7, the programme targets children aged 7 to 11, providing them with an engaging space to strengthen their reading skills and cultivate a love for books. Trained literacy teachers, supported by dedicated UG library staff, have volunteered their time and expertise to deliver interactive sessions and activities.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin, lauded Unicomer Guyana for its consistent support over the years, describing the company’s commitment—through its Courts Optical and Courts Inc. divisions—as a vital investment in the development of communities and the nation’s children. She also thanked the UG Library team and volunteers for their dedication to this transformative outreach.

Managing Director of Unicomer Guyana, Ms. Gillian Matthews, reaffirmed the company’s pledge to support the programme and the University’s broader work in community upliftment. “We are proud to see the positive impact this programme continues to have on children’s lives, and we are committed to ensuring its continuation,” she said.
In addition to reading activities, children will benefit from educational excursions, basic computer training, poetry, and other creative exercises designed to expand their skills and interests.

Guided by experienced facilitators, the young participants are grouped for sessions to ensure focused and interactive learning.
Chief Librarian, Ms. Debra Lowe, expressed the library’s enthusiasm in once again hosting the programme. She encouraged the children to fully embrace the opportunity: “Put your best into everything you do during the next three weeks and have fun reading.”

Reading is Fun remains one of UG’s hallmark community outreach programmes, demonstrating the University’s commitment to national development through education, training, and experiential learning.
