Slingerz keep perfect record with -nil dismissal of Santos
LEADERS Slingerz Football Club despite some testy moments, showed their superiority on Thursday to capture their 8th win of the season in the Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League.
The West Coast Side has been the most dominant side in the league, playing unbeaten with double digit victories overs some other sides.
And while they finished three three-nil, the score line does no justice to the fight and grit showed by Santos Football Club.
Three minutes after the opening whistle, Man of the match Romaine Brackenridge would score the game’s first goal to put Santos on the back foot.
Santos didn’t back down however as they showed more resolve and pushed Slingerz to the brink on occasions as they went into the break, down 1-nil.
After the break Slingerz returned with renewed energy and doubled the lead, off the boot of talisman Kelsey Benjamin in the 49th.
A period of play passed during which several opportunities went astray, until one of the leading scorers for season six, Marcus Tudor, hit the back of the net in the 68th minute to make it 3-nil.
Slingerz would comfortably take the win without adding to their score sheet.
The win see Slingerz maintain their stranglehold on the top spot on the league’s point table.
In another clash Western Tigers edged Den Amstel 2-1.
It was a tough first half with neither team registering a goal in the first half.
After the mid game resumption, Samuel Garnett would first put Tigers on the score sheet with his effort in the 53rd minute.
Chidiebere Chidume then equalised for Dem Amstel who went toe to toe with the West Ruimveldt power houses.
Western Tigers FC’s captain Daniel Wilson would settle the contest in the 78 minute to break the tie and give his team the lead 2-1 which they held on for the victory by the same margin.
The result sees Tigers move to six wins in eight clashes to gain the second spot on the table behind Slingerz with Guyana Police Force football club dropping down to third.
The league features 90 games among 10 teams.
The top side in Season 7 will collect two million dollars and being awarded an automatic qualifying spot at the CONCACAF/Caribbean Shield Championships.
The 2nd place team collects $1,200,000, 3rd place $800,000 and 4th place 500,000.
