Silver Bullets, YMCA, Swag Entertainment and DC Ballers qualify
By Joe Chapman
AFTER a delayed start to the quarterfinals, defending champions Silver Bullets were among the quarterfinal winners as the 11th Linden Greatest in the Streets football championship continued at the Retrieve Hard Court.
The tournament, which will conclude on Saturday at the tournament venue, also saw YMCA, Swag Entertainment and DC Ballers qualify on Wednesday evening.
When play actually got underway, first on the play tarmac were Swag Entertainment, who were held to a scoreless first period of play by a determined Realist Ballers side.
However, extra-time goals determined a winner after two Guinness Goals which came in the 27th and 28th minutes off the boots of Alan Halley and Kendolph Lewis, respectively.
The next quarterfinal match was between YMCA and Spaniards.
That game ended with the YMCA upsetting the Spaniards with a 4-0 triumph engineered by Kyman Price, who hit in a double with the first coming in the 26th minute, and the other in the 18th minute.
Jamal Bentick sealed the win when he netted a ‘Guinness Goal’ in the 22nd minute for that 4-0 victory.
The third quarterfinal was between the defending champions Silver Bullets and Turf President.
The Bullets side showed much composure and the end results reflected their confidence in walking away with a comfortable 2-0 win, as the experienced Colwyn Drakes sent them into the lead in the seventh minute.
That would be followed by a lanky Amaniki Buntin shot in the 15th minute.
The night-cap match ended with DC Ballers nudging their way past LA Ballers 1-0, the solitary goal of the game being hit in by Jashawn Moore in the 21st minute.
Tomorrow night (Saturday), in addition to the semifinals being played to arrive at the contesting finalists, there will be a plate battle among the losing quarterfinalists and $60,000 will be at stake.
In those games, Realist Ballers will clash with Spaniards, while Turf President and LA Ballers will also clash, with the winners of both encounters meeting in the plate final.
That will be followed by the semifinals, third-place match and then the final, where $500,000 will be at stake for the champions.
