Justice for Adrianna means uncovering the truth through due process, not mob pressure

Dear Editor,

THE tragic death of Adrianna Younge has deeply shaken our nation, evoking a wave of sorrow and anger. Understandably, emotions are running high. But in the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident, much of the public discourse, especially on social media and in sensationalist reports, has been dominated by speculation and emotion rather than by verified facts.

This rush to judgment has, unfortunately, bred a climate of outrage and blame, often bypassing the careful, evidence-based work of medical professionals and legal authorities. Such a volatile environment undermines our shared goal of justice.
Since Adrianna’s passing, we’ve witnessed a series of protests. While some are genuinely motivated by a desire for justice, there are disturbing signs that others are exploiting the situation for personal or political agendas.
The road blockages, tyre burnings, looting, and fear-mongering have gone far beyond peaceful protest. These acts, particularly following the release of the autopsy report, appear to be part of a broader, coordinated effort, not the spontaneous grief of a community in mourning.

I commend the police for their swift and decisive action in apprehending those engaged in criminal behaviour under the guise of protest. Their efforts are essential to maintaining order and protecting innocent citizens during this time of national grief. I trust that everyone involved in acts of violence, vandalism, and intimidation will be held accountable, in accordance with the law.

Justice for Adrianna means uncovering the truth through due process, not mob pressure or political theatre. I am hopeful that the ongoing investigations will expose not only the perpetrators of these public disturbances, but also those who may be orchestrating them behind the scenes.
Let us honour Adrianna’s memory with dignity, reason, and a collective commitment to justice, grounded in facts, not fury.
Sincerely,
Peggy Garib
