GUYANA’S transformation into one of the world’s most promising investment and tourism destinations took centre stage on Sunday as Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, addressed a global audience at Expo 2025 in Japan.
“Guyana’s appeal as an investment destination has never been greater,” Minister Walrond declared, as she outlined the South American nation’s bold economic strides and strategic efforts to attract foreign direct investment.
Addressing Japanese government officials, international dignitaries, business leaders, and media representatives, Minister Walrond emphasised the government’s steadfast commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment. She pointed to initiatives that promote ease of doing business, tax incentives, and support for high-potential sectors including infrastructure, energy, housing, and information and communication technology (ICT).
“Guyana is a land of potential and opportunity,” Minister Walrond told the international gathering. “We invite you to engage with us in the shared pursuit of economic growth, environmental stewardship, and global collaboration.”
Minister Walrond also reflected on Guyana’s remarkable evolution since its participation in Expo 2020 Dubai. The country has since recorded unprecedented tourism numbers, sustained economic growth, and significant development across multiple sectors.
“Guyana’s achievements extend far beyond tourism,” she explained. “The country’s economic landscape has evolved dramatically. Guyana has cemented its place among the world’s fastest-growing economies, driven primarily by the oil and gas sector, but we are ensuring that this growth benefits all sectors.”
In addition to its economic progress, Minister Walrond highlighted Guyana’s commitment to sustainability through its Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030 (LCDS 2030). The strategy balances environmental protection with the economic empowerment of Indigenous communities, she noted.
“Guyana’s forests are critical to the global fight against climate change, and we are determined to ensure that they continue to serve as a vital carbon sink for generations to come,” the minister added.
Guyana’s emergence as a leading sustainable tourism destination has also earned international recognition. Minister Walrond proudly shared that the country received the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) Travel Award for Destination of the Year in both 2024 and 2025.
The minister also took the opportunity to celebrate the enduring diplomatic relationship between Guyana and Japan, which began in 1967. She praised Japan for its leadership in innovation and sustainable development, noting the strong alignment between both countries’ development priorities.
Minister Walrond’s remarks resonated as a powerful invitation for international stakeholders to consider Guyana not only as a high-growth investment opportunity but also as a model of climate-conscious development and cultural richness.
As Guyana continues to expand its global footprint, Expo 2025 offered a strategic platform to position the country as a rising force on the world stage — one where business, sustainability, and inclusive growth go hand in hand.
