GUYANA’S track and field athletes are currently benefitting from the invaluable expertise of two-time Olympic gold medallist Felix Sanchez, who is conducting a four-day elite training clinic.
Sanchez, now a coach, is sharing his vast knowledge and insights with some of the nation’s top athletes at the National Track and Field Championship, instilling crucial tools for success at the highest levels of the sport.
For many of the athletes, it was a surreal experience to receive direct advice from Sanchez, the decorated 400m hurdles champion with Olympic titles from 2004 and 2012, as well as World Championship victories in 2001 and 2003.
Sanchez hopes his extensive experience will inspire the athletes to train with purpose and set ambitious goals.
“What you dream, you can achieve,” Sanchez passionately told the athletes. “You just have to put in the work, you have to be disciplined, you have to be consistent, and you have to believe in yourself. ”
The programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s Sport Academy, with support from the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).
Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. emphasised the importance of athletes receiving guidance from individuals who have achieved success at the level they aspire to reach.
“This is a special opportunity for you as athletes to learn from one of the best in the world,” Minister Ramson Jr. stated.
“He has competed and won at the highest global level. This programme gives you an invaluable opportunity to learn from his experience to achieve greatness.”
Sanchez, who represented the Dominican Republic during his illustrious career, is seen as a significant inspiration to many in the region.
The Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Guyana, Ernesto Torres-Pereyra, was also present and encouraged the athletes to make the most of the opportunity.
“We should all make the best of this opportunity,” Ambassador Torres-Pereyra urged.
