GUYANA’S Under-17 women’s football team has arrived in the Dominican Republic to compete in the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Qualifiers. They will aim to secure a place at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The young Guyanese squad has been training hard at home and enters the tournament with boosted confidence following recent friendly victories against Suriname.
They face a tough challenge in Group C, where they will play Panama, Cuba, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
This year’s CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Qualifiers feature a new two-round format. Twenty-two nations are competing in the first round, split into six groups. Matches are being held across four host nations: Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.
The group stage runs from January 27 to February 1, 2025. The six group winners and the two best runners-up will progress to the final round. There they will join the top four ranked teams in the region: USA, Mexico, Canada, and Haiti.
The final round, featuring three groups of four teams, will take place between March 31 and April 6, 2025. The winners of each group and the best second-placed team will then qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s under-17 men’s team is also preparing for World Cup qualification. They will travel to Costa Rica to compete from February 7 to 16, 2025.
