A GEORGETOWN taxi driver from Mandela Avenue has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. On Tuesday, 27-year-old father of two, Dexroy Fredericks appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The incident, which occurred on June 25, 2024, allegedly involved Fredericks driving hire car HD 1646 in a manner dangerous to the public, resulting in the death of 54-year-old Celus Griffith of Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Griffith, a security guard, was riding a pedal cycle at the time of the accident.
Fredericks’ attorney, Stacy Goodings, applied for bail, highlighting her client’s clean criminal record. However, the police prosecutor opposed the bail request owing to the serious nature of the offence and the possibility that the defendant might not return for trial.
Despite these objections, Magistrate Mc Gusty granted Fredericks bail in the sum of $350,000, with the condition that he reports to the East La Penitence Police Station on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. The case will be called again on October 2, 2024.
The accident took place at approximately 10:15hrs on the New Mandela to Eccles interlink, also known as Heroes Highway.
According to the police report, Fredericks claimed he was driving motor car HD 1646 south along the eastern carriageway when a cyclist, Griffith, suddenly crossed into his path.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, Fredericks said he applied brakes and swerved, but the car hit the cyclist. Griffith was thrown onto the front windscreen and then dragged about 200 feet from the point of impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A breathalyser test was conducted on Fredericks, which did not show traces of alcohol in his system.
