THE Guyanese male 4X400m relay team ran an impressive national men’s U20 record time of 3 minutes 11.38 seconds in the event ay at the World Athletics U20 Championship being held in Lima, Peru.

The quartet of Malachi Austin, Kaidon Persaud, Gill De Neilson and Enock Munroe had a time was not far off the senior division’s mark of 3 minutes and 9 seconds achieved in 2017 by the team of Jermiane Griffith, Winston George, Kelton Cumberbatch and Alistar Mclean.

The time, however, was only good enough to get them fifth place in their heat, two places outside the reckoning for a place in the 4X400 finals.

The USA U20 side was the fastest team into the finals with a season best 3 minutes 05.16 seconds, while the last qualifier into the finals was Poland with 3 minutes 10.71 seconds.

Meanwhile, sprinter Jackson Clarke was not able to repeat or better his performance when he ran in his men’s 200 meter semi-final on Thursday evening.

Clarke, who has a Personal Best (PB) and his season’s best of 20.62, ran 21.88 in the semifinal to finish seventh place.

He had on Thursday ran a blistering 21.37 to advance to the semifinals but did not improve on that run to miss a chance to go for gold.

The World Athletics U20 championship kicked off on the 27th and concludes today (Saturday) in the South American nation.

The full team is made up of the creme da la creme of the Guyana youth athletes, namely Tianna Springer along with Narissa McPherson and Nalicia Glen, along with the likes of Athaleyah Hinckson and Ezekiel Newton.

The team is managed by Athletics Association President Sheryl
Hermonstine with physiotherapist Aretha Legall and coaches
Quincy Clarke and Julian Edmonds.
