Barbados on course for third straight win in CWI Under-17 championship

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Defending champions Barbados are in a strong position to record their third successive win in the CWI Under-17 Championship after a dominant showing on the opening day of their third-round match against Guyana here Wednesday.
Playing at Gilbert Park, Barbados reached a respectable 188 in their first innings, before a three-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Zachary Carter helped them restrict Guyana to 49-5 at the end of play.
Barbados’ lower order led a fightback after they lost three early wickets for 17 runs to find themselves in trouble at 59-4.

Kevion Newton, who topscored with 37, together with Gadson Bowens (27), Shaquan Belle (24) and R’Jai Gittens, who scored an unbeaten 18, helped to bolster the total.
For Guyana, Golcharran Chulai finished with 3-42, while Riyad Latiff took 2-28.

Carter then undermined Guyana’s run chase from early, dismissing opener Parmeshwar Ram for four and Rampersaud Ramnauth for 21, as they slipped to 24-2.
They would lose three more wickets for 25 runs and will face an uphill task if they are to seriously challenge Barbados’ first innings total.
The two remaining matches were both evenly poised.

At the National Cricket Centre, Brendan Boodoo captured yet another six-wicket haul to help Trinidad and Tobago bowl out the Windward Islands for 152.
Boodoo grabbed 6-40, but the Windward Islands recovered from 93-8 to eventually pose a competitive total.
At the close of play, T&T reached 26-1.

And over at Inshan Ali Park, Jamaica was six without loss in pursuit of the Leeward Islands’ first innings total of 164.
Carlton Pluck led the way with 47 for the Leeward Islands and he was ably supported by Tanez Francis who made 28 and J’Quan Athanaze (23).
Vitel Lawes was the main destroyer for Jamaica with 5-51, while Tyriek Bryan took 3-32 and Demarco Scott 2-37.
