-promises to be a family-friendly affair, game-changer for local recreation scene
HAVE you ever dreamed of attending an event where you can roller skate with your family or friends in a safe and friendly atmosphere? ‘Glide’, Guyana’s first roller-skating event is now slated for August 24, 2024 at the Guyana National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Georgetown. The event was originally set for August 10.
This unique and very interesting initiative was created out of the observations made by the owner and event coordinator, Marlisa Osborne.
According to Marlisa, Glide is a pop-up roller rink that was born after she took note of the inadequate recreational activities that were available for the average person.
“I wanted to bring something fun, new, and different to the community. My goal is to create a thriving community where everyone can have an enjoyable experience,” she stated.

Only persons above the age of six will be allowed to skate as, according to Marlisa, the safety of everyone in attendance is paramount.
At Glide, the main attraction will be an open skating session with a retro disco theme.
Marlisa mentioned that there will be roller skates available for rent, and the first 40 people will be eligible to enjoy complimentary skate time.
Moreover, attendees can also look forward to a competition for the best retro disco outfits, along with other fun games that aren’t related to skating. Additionally, there will be mouthwatering food and beverages on sale at the location.
A number of vendors have already confirmed their participation. These include: The Fresh Shave which will be serving cool and flavourful shaved ice, Lost in the Sauce where patrons can purchase mouthwatering barbecue, sizzling hotdogs, crispy fries, and wings and Marissa’s Assorted Treats which will have delicious baked goods for all to eat.
Speaking about sponsorship, Marlisa said: “We’re fortunate to have some amazing sponsors on board for Glide. Smile 592 Dental Studio is covering our big giveaway, Ad Nation is responsible for all our prints, and Tons of Fun is sponsoring free popcorn. Kai Designs has created all of our incredible graphics, Pose and Pixels is our designated photographer and videographer, and Safe Space is another key supporter. We’re grateful to each of them for helping make this event a success.”
Tickets are still available and are priced at $2000 each. Interested persons can purchase theirs at SafeSpace on Robb Street, Georgetown, the University of Success Bookstore at Giftland Mall, or online via the Potsalt Events ‘app’. Skate rental incurs a separate charge. Gates will be opened at 15:00 hrs.
Marlisa is confident that she will be able to host the event in 2025.
“I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supporting Glide. Your enthusiasm and participation mean the world to us. We’re excited to create a fantastic experience and can’t wait to see you all there!”, she said.
