THE Ministry of Public Works, committed to the nation’s infrastructure development, continues to enhance the lives and livelihoods of Guyanese through various community development initiatives.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, highlighted recent efforts following President Dr. Irfaan Ali visit to Farm and neighbouring communities on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) earlier this year. Residents had invited the President to discuss their personal and infrastructural concerns.

“The community of Farm, like many others, is heavily populated with young professionals, schoolchildren, and elderly residents who rely on these roads daily,” Minister Indar explained. “When President Ali saw the state of the roads, he committed to upgrading both the main access roads and the side streets in the area.”
Significant improvements have been made, with residents expressing satisfaction over the upgraded main access roads and several side streets that were previously riddled with potholes.
Minister Indar also mentioned that over $400 million has been allocated for road improvements throughout the Mocha neighbourhood, with ongoing projects in Eccles and Herstelling communities. “President Ali has committed to investing over $400 million in the development of roads in Mocha Arcadia. Some streets have been built, and others are in progress,” he said.
The Minister emphasised the broader scope of development across Guyana, stating, “While significant projects are highlighted on social media, community development is happening nationwide. There are ongoing works on the East Coast of Demerara and in communities like Vigilance, Sophia, Mon Repos, and Plaisance.”

He reassured the public that these initiatives reflect the government’s promises to enhance the lives and environment of the people. “Under the direction of President Ali and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, our task is to ensure that these commitments are fulfilled for the betterment of our citizens,” Minister Indar added.
During his January visit to the Farm community, President Ali announced major road repair plans for the rapidly growing population on the East Bank of Demerara. He stressed the need to upgrade the infrastructure in Farm, Herstelling, and Covent Garden housing schemes to accommodate this growth.
President Ali also highlighted the importance of protecting newly renovated roadways, suggesting the installation of barriers at crossroads to facilitate the delivery of supplies and ensure longevity of the infrastructure. “We have seen in many areas where barriers help to protect the infrastructure. These barriers are not a hindrance; they ensure materials can be delivered efficiently to those building homes,” he stated.
With continued efforts and substantial investments, the Ministry of Public Works remains dedicated to improving infrastructure and fostering community development across Guyana.
