Teams from Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) are actively working to repair the runway lighting system that was extensively damaged during a severe thunderstorm accompanied by intense lightning.
According to an updated release from CJIA, the storm, which caused widespread disruption, particularly impacted the runway lighting system, necessitating immediate attention on Sunday.
As of now, crews have identified and replaced four damaged cable sections and five transformers. Additionally, the lightning protection system for the runway lighting equipment and several GPL transformers in the vicinity also sustained damage.
In response to the disrupted operations, several airlines have issued updates on their affected flights:
American Airlines:
- Flight AA 2557 from JFK, initially diverted to Barbados, is now expected to arrive at 13:09 hrs.
- Flight AA 1512 to Miami (MIA) is scheduled to depart at 13:49 hrs.
- Flight AA 1513 from Miami (MIA), also diverted to Barbados, is now estimated to arrive at 13:39 hrs.
- Flight AA 1534 to Miami (MIA) is expected to depart at 14:19 hrs.
JetBlue:
- Flight B61965 from JFK, diverted to Puerto Rico, is now expected to arrive at 13:00 hrs.
- Flight B61966 to JFK has a new estimated departure time of 14:37 hrs.
Copa Airlines:
- Flight CM 190 from Panama is expected to arrive at 11:24 hrs.
- Flight CM 191 to Panama is now scheduled to depart at 12:24 hrs.
