IN a poignant tribute to a pioneer of female education in Guyana, Mrs. Bebe Isha Beekie, the first female graduate of the University of Guyana (UG), is being remembered as a trailblazer, a beacon of resilience, and a fervent advocate for equality.

Her remarkable journey, spanning an era marked by gender biases and societal norms, serves as an inspiration to generations.

Dr. Raj Beekie, Mrs. Beekie’s proud son and an Associate Professor at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, reminisced about his mother’s indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to education. “We were all inspired by Mum. She was a trailblazer in many regards, advocating for equality and respect for all, especially women, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew her,” he remarked.

Mrs. Beekie’s pursuit of higher education in the male-dominated landscape of 1960s Guyana was a bold assertion against prevailing norms. Despite facing numerous challenges, including interruptions due to pregnancies, she remained resolute in her quest for knowledge. Her journey was not solitary; it was buoyed by the unwavering support of her family and mentors at UG.

In her academic pursuits, Mrs. Beekie delved into the intricacies of Guyanese Creolese, a testament to her passion for exploring and preserving the linguistic heritage of her homeland. Her thesis, “Historical Influences on Guyanese Creolese,” stands as a testament to her dedication and scholarly acumen.

Beyond academia, Mrs. Beekie’s legacy reverberates through her decades-long service as an educator at Saint Joseph’s High School. Dr. Beekie fondly recalls his mother’s tireless dedication to her students and her role as a mentor to aspiring women within her community.

Reflecting on her graduation, Mrs. Beekie penned a reflective poem capturing the essence of her journey—a blend of sacrifice, perseverance, and triumph. Her words echo the sentiments of countless women who have dared to defy convention in pursuit of their dreams.
