In a poignant reflection on the recent tragedy in Arau, where a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) mission claimed the lives of esteemed military personnel, Dr. Randy Persaud, Professor Emeritus and Adviser in the Office of the President, paid tribute to the fallen heroes and extended heartfelt condolences to their families.
The names of Brigadier Gary Beaton; Col. Michael Shahoud; Lt. Col. Michael Charles; Lt. Col. Sean Welcome, and Sgt. Jason Khan will forever be etched in the collective memory of a nation spanning 83,000 square miles.
“Alongside their comrades Lt. Andio Crawford and Cpl. Dwayne Jackson, these heroes embarked on a mission in Arau, the same village where President Mohamed Irfaan Ali had recently raised the Golden Arrowhead.”
Dr. Persaud emphasised that while these valiant souls may have left the physical realm, their legacy will endure. “Their honor, courage, service, and unwavering fighting spirit to protect and cherish the country will live on through the annals of history,” he said.
Acknowledging the profound grief felt by the families, Dr. Persaud recognised the inadequacy of words to ease their pain. He assured the families that the entire nation stands united in solidarity during “this dark December,” expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
In concluding his tribute, Dr. Persaud shared President Ali’s poignant words: “They were not just military men, they were guardians of our sovereignty, defenders of our values, and champions of our freedom.”
Having witnessed the President’s deep connection with uniformed personnel just days before the tragedy unfolded, Dr. Persaud assured the families that they will never be left alone in their sorrow.
