Is Kwayana afflicted with some sort of selective awareness?

Dear Editor,
In a letter carried in the Stabroek News on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, Eusi Kwayana of the WPA stated that by laying blame at the feet of the Guyana Press Association for Guyana’s drop in the latest World Press Freedom Index, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo is setting the stage for attacks on its controversially re-elected head, Nazima Raghubir.

“Vice President is a man with real power. He knows well that pointing his finger at a functionary of this kind may alert certain activists on his side of the political divide, and they may feel it their duty to bring this functionary into line, and that can take various forms,” Kwayana wrote.

For this reader, this is simply another instance of Kwayana picking and choosing what to see. It is to be recalled that when challenged on his silence during the five-month rigging attempt by the APNU+AFC coalition, Kwayana’s response was that he could not speak on those matters as he was not in Guyana and was not aware of the facts, despite worldwide coverage and condemnation of all that took place.

One, therefore, has to wonder if Kwayana is afflicted with the same sort of selective awareness in regard to the numerous comments and attacks on the Guyana Police Force, its head and other senior ranks, the Chairman of GECOM, the Director of Public Prosecution and other officials, by the Leader of the Opposition and PNC/APNU Leader Aubrey Norton, who “may alert certain activists on his side of the political divide,” and they may feel it is their duty to bring these functionaries into line using various forms.

Or is it a case that Kwayana, like Amanza Walton Desir, thinks that PPP supporters are “mentally lazy”?

Over to you now Eusi…

Yours truly,
Brian Azore
