HUNDREDS of Lethem residents received free specialist health care last weekend when the 18th Chinese Medical Brigade conducted a two-day outreach exercise.
The medical brigade included medical officials from general internal medicine departments, general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology and obstetrics, ophthalmology, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pediatrics, radiology, and anesthesiology.
The Chinese doctors gave each participating resident a complete physical examination and answered questions about blood glucose, blood pressure, and B-scan ultrasonography examination services, amongst others.
The medical brigade provided medication and treatment to the patients and free health leaflets on diabetes, hypertension and diabetic retinopathy prevention to all the participants.
Over 150 residents participated in the outreach; over 20 people were treated with Chinese massage and orthopedic manipulation therapy, while many others were treated with other medical methods. The medical brigade was welcomed and praised by the locals.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Region Nine Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Bryan Allicock, who participated in the outreach, was grateful for the service of the Chinese Medical Brigade in Lethem.
He also wanted the medical brigade to continue providing further medical support to Region Nine.
Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, also participated in official activities, visited the site to support the medical team members, and communicated with the local participants.
The Captain of the 18th Chinese Medical Brigade, Dr. Chu Xuehui, said, “2023 is an important year, which marks the 30th anniversary of the Chinese Medical Brigade’s service to the Guyanese. The 18th Medical Brigade has carried out outreaches in communities of Region Five, Six and 10, along with Region Four. In the coming months, the 18th Medical Brigade will provide more free health services in remote areas on weekends and holidays.”
