Man accused of drug trafficking remanded

A SANDY Babb Street Kitty resident was, on Friday, remanded to prison for drug trafficking, after a quantity of cannabis and ecstasy were found at his premises.

Devon Rambarran appeared before Principal Magistrate, Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to two charges.

Particulars of the charges alleged that Rambarran, on January 4, 2023, at Sandy Babb Street, had 28 grams of cannabis and 22 grams of ecstasy in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was represented by Attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who made an application for reasonable bail.

The Attorney told the court that her client suffers from a hearing disability. She explained that Rambarran owns the Sandy Babb Street property, where he also operates a shop.

Additionally, part of the property is rented out to persons in a music band.

Rahamat further stated that her client had no knowledge of the drug at the premises hence the case was based on multiple occupancy of the house.

However, the police prosecutor told the court that some of the drugs were found in a cookie tin and the remainder was found inside a transparent bag.

The prosecutor added that Rambarran, though cautioned by officers, confessed to the crime and told officers that he sold narcotics to get money needed to renovate his house.

Magistrate Isaac-Marcus remanded the defendant to prison until January 20, 2023.
